Since the 45th session of the United Nations General Assembly, the Secretary-General has taken several initial steps to implement the resolutions on crime prevention, criminal justice, international cooperation in combating organized crime, and protection of human rights in the administration of justice.
Abstract
Areas of focus have included the implementation of United Nations standards and norms in crime prevention and criminal justice, the strengthening of the institutional capacity of the United Nations in this area, and international cooperation through bilateral and multilateral arrangements and agreements. Other meetings and discussions have focused on technical cooperation and information sharing and exchange. Progress has been uneven because of the many competing demands and resource constraints; further progress will therefore require strengthening of the United Nations capacity in this area.
