              THE RELATIONSHIPS AMONG EVENTS, PARTICIPANTS, AND THE PROCESS OF PLANNING AND IMPLEMENTING CRIME PREVENTION THROUGH ENVIRONMENTAL DESIGN (CPTED) DEMONSTRATIONS ARE ANALYZED IN THREE SUBENVIRONMENTS.
          Abstract
              THE DOCUMENT PRESENTS A HISTORICAL AND ANALYTICAL DESCRIPTION OF THE PROCESS BY WHICH A CPTED DEMONSTRATION IS PLANNED AND IMPLEMENTED. THREE DEMONSTRATIONS ARE IDENTIFIED: THE COMMERCIAL DEMONSTRATION IN PORTLAND, OREGON; THE SCHOOLS DEMONSTRATION IN BROWARD COUNTY, FLORIDA; AND THE RESIDENTIAL DEMONSTRATION IN MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA. DEMONSTRATION ACTIVITIES ARE RELATED TO SEVEN STAGES IN THE PLANNING AND IMPLEMENTION PROCESS: DESCRIPTION, DIAGNOSIS, INITIATION, INTRODUCTION TRANSITION, ROUTINIZATION, AND STABILIZATION. ILLUSTRATIONS OF THE DEVELOPMENT OF A STREET LIGHTING PROJECT AND SECURITY ADVISORY SERVICES ARE DESCRIBED. SITES FOR THE PROJECT WERE SELECTED ACCORDING TO CRIMERELATED, ENVIRONMENT-RELATED, AND PROGRAM-RELATED CRITERIA. DESPITE THE DISSIMILARITY OF THE CPTED SITES. THE DEMONSTRATIONS DEVELOPMENTAL PROCESSES WERE FOUND TO BE REMARKABLY SIMILAR. THREE COMMON AREAS OF IMPORTANCE ARE SOLICITING AND ENCOURAGING LOCAL INVOLVEMENT AND INPUT THROUGH ALL PLANNING AND IMPLEMENTATION STAGES; DEVELOPING A MANAGEMENT PLAN THAT CONTINUOUSLY SEEKS OUT AREAS OF COOPERATION WITH EXISTING PROGRAMS; AND PROGRAMMING CONTINUOUS RESEARCH AND EVALUATION ACTIVITIES INTO THE MANAGEMENT PLAN. CASE STUDY MATRICES PRESENT CONCRETE EXAMPLES OF CONTINGENCIES THAT MIGHT BE INCORPORATED IN FUTURE CPTED DEMONSTRATIONS. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT MODIFIED--DAG)
