Abstract
The mission statement of New Jersey's Criminal Justice Veterans Initiative is to address the needs of veteran offenders by linking them to services and benefits to which they are entitled, and to assist them in successfully reintegrating back into society while decreasing their risk of recidivism, reducing the costs, and increasing public safety. The presentation presents information on the need for a veteran offenders' initiative and efforts by State and Federal agencies to assist veteran offenders. Information is also presented on the current state of veteran offenders in New Jersey's jails and prison, costs of housing these offenders at the Federal, State, and local levels, and the specific needs of veteran offenders. A list of local, State, and Federal stakeholders is also presented, with information on the work of these agencies and organizations to assist veteran offenders. The presentation ends with a discussion of Operation Veteran Reentry established by the New Jersey State Parole Board to assist veteran offenders.
