Curricula designed as a guideline for the delivery of performance-based law enforcement training in domestic violence are outlined.
Abstract
Curricula guidelines regarding domestic violence are provided as part of the Basic Course guidelines system developed by California law enforcement trainers and criminal justice educators in cooperation with the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training. Divided into various performance objectives, scenarios, and learning activities, the contents include, in outline format, the differences between and among domestic violence, domestic disputes, and civil disputes; a review of domestic violence procedures, court protective orders, arrest criteria and enforcement procedures for court orders; the procedures to be followed when a court order is not verifiable; the documentation procedure for cases of domestic violence; an explanation of the steps and options for criminal or civil legal action; and assisting victims of domestic violence. Also included are various role playing models and discussion guides, including the procedure to be followed when conducting a preliminary investigation of a domestic violence incident. Supporting materials, references, and a domestic violence investigation checklist are provided.
