This report provides data from fatal motor vehicle crash records compiled by the New Jersey Fatal Accident Investigation Unit of the Division of State Police for 2008.
Abstract
Highlights of the 2008 report include: 1) 555 fatal crashes occurred with 590 people killed; 2) of the fatalities, 31.7 percent had consumed alcohol to some extent; 3) an average of 1.61 persons were killed every day; 4) pedestrian death toll was 138; 5) of the 810 drivers listed, 36 New Jersey drivers and 1 out-of-state driver were suspended and 3 drivers without valid licenses; 6) of all fatal crashes, 83.3 percent occurred during clear weather conditions; 7) of the know drivers involved in fatal crashes, 75.1 were males; and 8) there were 30 tractor-trailers involved in 29 fatal crashes which resulted in 32 fatalities. 2008 was a monumental year for the State of New Jersey with a reduction in the number of fatal motor vehicle crashes. New Jersey recorded over an 18 percent decrease in fatal crashes for 2008. This report provides statistics of the fatal motor vehicle crash records compiled by the Fatal Accident Investigation Unit of the Division of State Police for New Jersey in 2008.
