Abstract

This brief, informational document is geared toward local government officials, jail administrators, correctional officers, and health care professionals. It provides fast facts on substance use disorder and how to address it. Brief sections on topics such as: what readers can do, such as developing policies and procedures to detect and properly manage acute substance withdrawal; where to start looking for guidance on policy development and withdrawal management procedures; and training and technical assistance. The document includes links to resources on the topics highlighted, which are geared specifically to practitioners in the field. It also provides more information about the Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA) and the National Institute of Corrections (NIC).
