Abstract
This handbook was developed to provide information for stakeholders in planning and implementing crime prevention strategies and interventions. The handbook is intended for use by a variety of different groups: national, regional, and local governments; national, regional, and international donors and cooperation agencies; and personnel with different skills and roles in crime prevention, including policymakers, judges, social workers, researchers, police officers, and probation officers. The handbook is divided into six chapters that provide information on the range of crime prevention approaches available to the different audiences. Chapter 1 contains an introduction to crime prevention concepts and the basic principles underlying the Guidelines, while chapter 2 addresses the key role of governments in crime prevention and intervention strategies. Chapter 3 presents information on knowledge-based crime prevention, while chapter 4 provides information on the planning, monitoring, and evaluation of crime prevention and intervention strategies. Chapter 5 discusses the multidisciplinary approach to crime prevention and the value of working in partnerships, while chapter 6 provides information for communities and non-governmental organizations to work together on crime prevention and intervention strategies.
