This 2012 Annual Report of the Illinois Motor Vehicle Theft Prevention Council describes the Council's achievements and challenges over the past year in reducing motor vehicle theft in the State.
Abstract
Vehicle theft in the State has declined 64 percent since 1991, when the Motor Vehicle Theft Prevention Act was enacted. From 1991 to 2009, the number of stolen vehicles decreased from 75,642 to 26,917, resulting in a savings of approximately $33 million in property losses. Grant funds awarded by the Council have improved motor vehicle theft law enforcement by establishing and sustaining multi-jurisdictional task forces, investigative teams, and other anti-theft efforts throughout the State. Since its establishment, the Council has granted approximately $121 million to a variety of anti-theft programs and efforts. This has resulted in the recovery of just over $630 million in stolen vehicles and reduced theft rates. Grant programs are described. 4 figures
