This report provides information on the types of programs supported by the U.S. Department of Justice's Byrne Justice Assistance Grant Program and looks at how these programs are changing the criminal justice system.
Abstract
This report, from the National Criminal Justice Association, provides information on the types of programs supported by the U.S. Department of Justice's Byrne Justice Assistance Grant Program and looks at how these programs are changing the criminal justice system. The report describes reform efforts by State administering agencies aimed at broadening stakeholder involvement, developing statewide strategic plans, and funding evidence-based and data-generating projects. Highlights of the following State projects are presented in this report: legislation in Connecticut to reduce the number of young people sent to the adult system; Tennessee's efforts to target high crime rates in medium-sized cities; Massachusetts' use of cutting edge strategies to reduce crime and prevent victimization; Pennsylvania's use of improved interventions for persons with mental illness; California's efforts to address overcrowding in its prisons; Illinois' efforts to reduce recidivism; Mississippi's efforts to develop a comprehensive strategic plan to address violent crime and reduce drug use; Hawaii's efforts to improve probation; Texas's progress in justice reinvestment; and Ohio's initiative to reduce crime in violence-plagued neighborhoods. Additional projects in the following States are also highlighted: Colorado, Vermont, West Virginia, Arizona, Arkansas, Minnesota, Louisiana, Kentucky, Nevada, Alaska, Florida, the District of Columbia, Iowa, Alabama, Oregon, Rhode Island, Wisconsin, Georgia, Virginia, Michigan, Maryland, New York, and New Mexico.
