This article examined the advancement of Web site technology and its impact on law enforcement as a new utility in a new era of information technology.
Abstract
The once obscure medium of the Internet, initially created for researchers in communicating more effectively has now evolved into a communications staple for all. The evolution of law enforcement’s involvement with the Internet has only been a few years. A major role of any police department is providing a variety of information to its citizens. With the development of the law enforcement Web site, agencies are now able to add a valuable information resource and public relations tool to their dissemination list. Most citizens, through their home, or business have access to the Internet. Law enforcement Web sites can now include information ranging from crime statistics to employment opportunities. The article described the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office in Tampa, Florida, experience in launching its first Web site in 1994. The daily improvements and capabilities in Web site technology has increased the potential uses a Web site can offer law enforcement. The development and maintenance of an informative Web site can benefit both the agency and public by conserving time and resources.
