Indexers use the controlled vocabulary contained in this thesaurus to assign subject terms to public policy literature, to Congressional Research Service (CRS) reports, and to legislative material in a consistent fashion.
Abstract
The vocabulary, which increases retrieval accuracy and permits greater search efficiency, is current as of December 16, 1991 and includes 9,954 terms. In scope, the vocabulary encompasses the broad research areas of public affairs assigned to the research divisions of the CRS and emphasizes both the social sciences and the policy aspects of the pure and applied sciences. The format used in this vocabulary facilitates the assigning of indexing terms to a document at the most appropriate levels of specificity or generality and from a variety of points of view. Terms are used as subject content descriptors in the major legislative files created and maintained by the CRS.
