This affirmative action plan provides a policy statement, including a statement against sexual harassment, and information on policy dissemination, responsibility assignment, affirmative action goals and responsibilities, and audit/reporting systems.
Abstract
The Maine affirmative action policy statement constitutes a commitment to nondiscrimination in hiring and promotion with regard to race, color, religion, sex, national origin, ancestry, age, physical or mental handicap (except where such would interfere with job-related situations), marital status, and status as a disabled veteran or Vietnam veteran, except where based on a bona fide occupational qualification or under circumstances where inmates' right to privacy or security needs are paramount. The policy also involves a commitment to employing and promoting qualified handicapped persons, disabled veterans and Vietnam veterans. In the policy statement on sexual harassment, such harassment is defined, and the grounds and nature for sanctions against such harassment are delineated. The goal in selection procedure is to ensure that all phases of the selection procedure for institutional entry-level positions are objective, job-related, and nondiscriminatory by developing and implementing a comprehensive and consistent selection process for each institution. Goals for equal employment include a commitment to recruiting women and the development of a comprehensive correctional career ladder and to overcome resistance to change through training, education, and counseling. Charts present hiring and promotion goals with respect to sex and minority status for each job position in the various organizational units. The appendixes include various forms and procedures to be used in association with the affirmative action plan.
