The Media, Education, and Information Referral Committee has been established in Montgomery County, Maryland, to educate the public on the county's community policing philosophy.
Abstract
The Committee believes that communication is essential to increase community involvement and assure successful community policing. Therefore, the Committee is committed to creating an environment that encourages solutions to community problems. The Committee's plan calls for releasing the Montgomery County Police Department's community policing logo to the media as part of an information and training campaign for both citizens and police officers. The plan also involves educating neighborhood watch groups, homeowner and citizen associations, and various ethnic and religious organizations. Additional strategies focus on developing media interest, publishing a community resource guide, conducting biannual police open houses, and developing a citizen complaint and commendation procedure pamphlet.
