This fiscal year (FY) 2012 Annual Report of the National Institute of Corrections (NIC) focuses on its work as a "center of learning, innovation, and leadership that shapes and advances effective correctional practice and public policy."
Abstract
The NIC is a component of the Federal Bureau of Prisons under the U.S. Justice Department. In this Annual Report, NIC activities are divided into outreach, service, and facility operations. Outreach efforts intend to involve an increasing number of corrections professionals in the training and technical assistance offered by NIC. This is done in a number of ways, from public hearings to networks, forums, and focus groups. NIC activities under outreach include advisory board hearings, networks and forums, focus groups, conferences, hosted events, partnerships, and updates. NIC "services" encompass training, technical assistance, and the various programs NIC has developed and implemented throughout the Nation. Offering solutions that assist correctional agencies in fulfilling their core missions is at the center of what NIC does. Specific NIC services mentioned in this report include training, technical assistance, and research pertinent to the provisions of the Prison Rape Elimination Act; systematic approaches to improving correctional performance; pretrial, probation, and parole; and special populations. NIC activities related to "facility operations" include Indian Country jails; and training, networks, and forums that pertain to jail management.
