Abstract
Officials in 33 States were using electronic monitoring devices to supervise nearly 2,300 offenders in 1988 -- almost three times the number using this approach a year earlier, according to a National Institute of Justice survey. The article reports on the 1988 survey, compares the responses with those of the previous year and sketches a picture of the use of electronic monitoring. The document also presents data on jail management software; using the law to improve school order and safety; crime prevention/deterrence; defense (legal)/prosecution; institutional corrections (adult); juvenile justice system; law enforcement; offenses; probation and parole; public involvement; reference and statistics; staff resource development; system policy and planning; and victim services.
