Abstract
During the past year, the Department attained most of its objectives, particularly in the areas of services to inmates and parolees. A significant development was the implementation of the plan to separate juvenile from adult offenders in the State's institutions. Another notable achievement was the establishment of an inmate college program at the Youth Correctional Institution at Annandale. This program is designed for those inmates desiring college degrees and credit for college courses. Planning for rebuilding the Trenton State Prison was undertaken during the year. The project's first phase is expected to near completion within the next fiscal year. The Bureau of Parole extended its services to parolees through the implementation of such programs as the National Alliance of Businessmen, the Vocational Service Center, and the Community Resource Specialist Project. A significant administrative accomplishment was the establishment of the Division of Juvenile Services and the restructuring of the Division of Policy and Planning to include the Bureau of Parole. It is expected that the efforts of the staff to implement the legislative mandates of the Department will be enhanced considerably by these developments. Activities are described for the Department's Divisions of Administration, Adult Institutions, Policy and Planning, and Juvenile Services. Limited tabular data are provided. Appended are organizational charts for the Department and each of its divisions. (Author summary modified)
