In 1981, New Jersey's courts disposed of 711,391 cases compared to 700,516 cases added. The criminal Speedy Trial program began on Jan. 1, 1981, and sets specific time goals for each of the major intervals of the criminal case process.
Abstract
The report also discusses the New Jersey project for court computerization, juvenile justice and family court services, youth services and community involvement, child support enforcement, bail reform, and jail overcrowding (the total population in county jails exceeded capacity). It notes such special programs as restitution and community service, violent crimes compensation, the Civil Appeals Settlement Program, jury use and management, the use of credit cards to post bail or pay fines, a shoplifters' program, and the Random Audit Compliance Program.
