Abstract
THE NINE SPEECH AND SLIDE PRESENTATIONS COVER THE ACTIVITIES OF THE NATIONAL CLEARINGHOUSE FOR CRIMINAL JUSTICE PLANNING AND ARCHITECTURE, ENVIRONMENTAL DESIGN DEMONSTRATIONS IN A COMMERCIAL, A SCHOOL, AND A RESIDENTIAL SETTING, AND FEDERAL AVIATION ADMINISTRATION SECURITY PLANNING. OTHER AREAS DISCUSSED ARE THE SECURITY SYSTEM AND THE SECURITY-RELATED PROBLEMS OF THE BART (BAY AREA RAPID TRANSIT) SYSTEM; THE CONCEPT OF DEFENSIBLE SPACE IN AN URBAN SETTING, ESPECIALLY IN HIGH-RISE PUBLIC HOUSING; THE MODEL SCHOOL SECURITY SYSTEM IN USE IN ALEXANDRIA, VIRGINIA; THE WORK OF LEAA'S PRIVATE SECURITY COMMITTEE; AND THE LAW ENFORCEMENT STANDARDS LABORATORY (LESL) AND ITS TESTING OF SECURITY DEVICES AND SYSTEMS. THE REPORTS OF FOUR DISCUSSION GROUPS EXAMINE CONSIDERATIONS RELATING TO THE PURPOSE OF VARIOUS TYPES OF FACILITIES AND THE NATURE OF THE ENVIRONMENT THEY PRODUCE; THE MIXING OF OLD AND NEW STRUCTURES IN AN AREA, THE USE OF HIGH-RISE AND LOW DENSITY BUILDINGS IN URBAN PUBLIC HOUSING; TRADE-OFFS AND POSSIBLE CONFLICTING OBJECTIVES; AND INSTITUTIONAL SECURITY DESIGN. A LIST OF THE CONFERENCE PARTICIPANTS IS INCLUDED. (SNI ABSTRACT)
