This document from the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation contains information for local governments regarding provision of mental health services for recently released inmates.
In 2011, the California State Legislature passed legislation aimed at decreasing the cycling of lower level inmate-patients in and out of State prisons. To ensure that inmates receiving services while incarcerated continue to receive services upon release, the statewide Mental Health Program has coordinated with county departments of mental health (DMH) for continuity of care for these patients. This document contains planning information for use by county DMHs to plan for and implement cost-effective measures to ensure an optimal transition process for inmate-patients requiring mental health services post-release. The main topics covered by the manual are Mental Health Services Delivery System Levels of Care; Status upon Release; Notification to Counties; PRCS Pre-Release Planning Roles and Responsibilities; Pre-Release Planning Process for Inmate-Patients in Psychiatric Crisis; Documents Sent to County Department of Mental Health; Accessing Health Records Information after Release from Prison; PRCS Contact Information; and PRCS Resource Information.
