Since the 1971 enactment of drug legislation in South Carolina that created a permanent drug and narcotics study committee within the General Assembly, the members have worked to become knowledgeable and keep abreast of activities in drug education, treatment, aftercare, rehabilitation, and law enforcement.
During the 1985-1986 legislative session, the Committee passed a number of legislative proposals including strengthening law enforcement officers' ability to conduct searches for illegal liquor, tightening the laws governing controlled substances, increasing penalties for manufacturing or using false identification, amending laws against selling or unlawfully transferring alcohol to minors. The report includes information on the State's Commission on Alcohol and Drug Abuse, Department of Corrections, Department of Education substance abuse programs, law enforcement division, Department of Mental Health projects, and rehabilitation programs.
