This volume presents lesson plans and teaching suggestions for use by lawyers and law students who are serving as resource persons for law-related education programs provided to students in kindergarten through the eighth grade and to both regular students and exceptional students.
Abstract
The lesson plans are designed to help students understand the legal system and how it functions and to develop analytical skills and the capacity for clear thinking. The guide is based on the educational philosophy that a resource person should be an integral part of any law-related program rather than provide a one-time experience which is isolated from other learning. Resource persons are advised to be involved in a specific lesson or series of lessons which are part of the curriculum and to receive guidance from the teacher regarding the students' maturity and the total curriculum. Specific lesson plans are provided for each grade as well as for classes of educable mentally retarded students, orthopedically handicapped students, hearing-impaired students, and gifted students. The lesson plans include information on the grade level and the lesson goals activities which the teacher should conduct prior to the resource person's visit, the specific steps in the lesson plan, and followup activities for use by the teacher to reinforce the visit. Suggestions for working with the teacher and with specific types of students are also provided. The lessons cover such topics as classroom rules, consumer rights and responsibilities, and due process. Photographs, illustrations, and an appendix listing additional resource organizations and individuals are provided.
