This report presents findings from an online survey of service providers throughout New Mexico in order to assess whether their gang prevention, intervention, and treatment strategies take into account the unique dynamics of the gang problem.
Abstract
There was significant variation among respondents regarding the degree to which respondents or their agencies work with gang members. Twelve respondents described current programming within their agencies that directly or indirectly address gangs. Four respondents indicated that although their agencies have not explicitly designed services to address gang membership, they are sufficiently flexible in tailoring their services to individual needs, which may include gang-related issues. Three respondents indicated that their agencies neither have programs that address gangs or could be modified to do so. The 12 respondents who described their agencies' gang-related programming represented 12 distinct offices within 9 agencies. These offices/agencies are listed by name and location, and their gang-related programs and services are briefly described. The development and implementation of the online survey was achieved with input and assistance from members of the Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) Task Force and the New Mexico Gang and Terrorism Task Force. The PSN Task Force intends to use the survey findings in creating a resource directory for referrals, identify needs for gang programming, and help design their media outreach campaign to combat gang violence statewide. The New Mexico Gang and Terrorism Task Force plans to use the survey information to help craft gang-specific legislation. 1 table, 3 figures, and appended questionnaire
