Abstract
Under the U.S. Department of Justice, Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA), Smart Policing Initiative (SPI), grant awards totaling nearly $6 million were given to 16 law enforcement agencies across the United States (Baltimore, MD Police Department, Boston, MA Police Department, Cincinnati, OH Police Department, Glendale, AZ Police Department, Indio, CA Police Department, Joliet, IL Police Department, Lansing, MI Police Department, Los Angeles, CA Police Department, Lowell, MA Police Department, Memphis, TN Police Department, Palm Beach, FL Sheriff's Office, Philadelphia, PA Police Department, Reno, NV Police Department, San Diego, CA Police Department, Savannah, GA Police Department, and Winston-Salem, NC Police Department) with the task to identify crime problems and enlist a research partner to assess the effectiveness of their SPI efforts. The intent is to encourage the use of evidence-based practices followed by a research-based demonstration on the effectiveness of their efforts, through the use of performance measures. The lessons learned from these efforts will be made available for use by other law enforcement agencies confronted with similar problems. The experiences of these 16 agencies will add to the body of knowledge of effective police tactics and strategies.
