This 1990 annual report of the New Jersey Criminal Disposition Commission describes the activities and accomplishments of the commission during fiscal year 1990 and presents policy recommendations to the New Jersey Legislature.
Abstract
The commission has focused on developing and assessing methods for managing the growing populations of convicted offenders more efficiently and effectively. The commission has published and distributed reports on the use of intermediate punishments, mandatory sentences for firearms offenses, and the prior criminal histories of prison inmates. A survey is in progress to assess the attitudes of New Jersey citizens toward the use of intermediate punishments. The commission completed a proposal for a merging of criminal justice data systems, finished a preliminary evaluation of a supervised pretrial release program, and testified before the U.S. Congress in support of a proposal for Federal funds to assist States in expanding intermediate sanctions. Commission recommendations are to establish an advisory committee to review and evaluate the mandatory sentencing provisions of the New Jersey Code of Criminal Justice, strengthen parole and probation supervision systems, expand the use of intermediate sentencing options while continuing their evaluation, modify and improve the Court Disposition Reporting System, enhance the Commission's membership, and provide support to the commission. 5 figures
