This document examines court commitments for 2009 in the State of New York.
Abstract
This document describes the characteristics of inmates admitted to the New York State Department of Correctional Services during one calendar year (2009), focusing on inmates admitted into a State prison facility for the first time on their current sentence (15,322). Another 8,270 were counted as returned parole violators, and 612 were other types of admissions. The analysis presents an overview of information on various data points such as commitment offense, felony class, category of commitment offense, age at commitment, country of birth, drug offenses, county of commitment, race and ethnicity of admissions, and minimum and maximum sentence lengths. It then compares multiple tables throughout the report to show trends in admission data across the years 2005 and 2009. Finally, a comparison analysis provides details of the proportion of new commitments by gender between 1980 and 2009. Data were collected from 24,204 New York State Department of Correctional Services admissions. Tables, figures, and appendixes
