This study examined noncompliance in the intensive supervision period.
Abstract
This study describes violating behavior and sanctioning responses in the postincarceration period. The authors describe patterns of noncompliance during supervised releasea subject known little aboutand found that (a) nearly all offenders committed at least one violation and (b) the vast majority of violations were drug related. Additionally, the authors found that sanctioned offenders were less likely to reoffend, but that (a) severity was not critical, and (b) the relationship did not persist as violations grow. These results suggest that agencies may increase the effectiveness of sanctioning policies through careful consideration of what sanctions to apply, to whom and at what point.
