The National School Safety Center (NSSC) has solicited gang intelligence data from law enforcement agencies in 100 of the largest metropolitan areas in the country.
Abstract
Each jurisdiction was asked to provide information on the scope of gang activity in their area, including numbers and kinds of gangs, gang membership, and gang-related crimes. The agencies were also asked to provide information on their crime prevention and intervention strategies and programs. This information will be used to update the NSSC's publication Gangs in School: Breaking Up Is Hard To Do, now in its seventh printing. NSSC has developed a questionnaire designed to assess the scope of the gang problem in school districts and communities. NSSC staff have worked with the Los Angeles County Superintendent of Schools to provide a day-long training session on gangs and school crisis management.
