This guide presents a checklist for grantors that will assist them in enabling grantees to develop a program structure and design that will increase the chances that the funded program will have its intended long-term impact.
Abstract
This involves a three-pronged approach. First, grantors must support grantees in implementing and evaluating the funded program so as to prove its effectiveness to policymakers. Second, grantors must provide opportunities for grantees to develop an organizational capacity for performance measurement. Third, grantors must recognize that as a funded program develops, the type of support required to improve, deliver, and replicate a program will change. The seven checklists presented in this guide are intended as tools to guide grantors in their working with grantees in ways that increase the chances the program will sustain its operations effectively over time. One checklist provides guidance in data collection and performance measurement. A second checklist guides grantors in providing assistance that minimizes the burden on grantees. A third checklist addresses the grantor's provision of technical assistance that supports sustainability. The fourth checklist guides grantors in how to invest in organizational capacity. The fifth checklist assists grantors in encouraging collaboration between grantees and other organizations that can facilitate the efficient and effective achievement of common goals. The two remaining checklists assist grantors in achieving accountability and effective oversight of funded projects, as well as an assessment of the organizational context in which the funded project will function. 29 references listed under topics pertinent to grantor actions that contribute to the sustainability of funded programs
