The National Law Enforcement and Corrections Technology Center's (NLECTC), Law Enforcement Analysis Facility (LEAF) was established in 1996 to evaluate, test and demonstrate technologies developed by the U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory Information Directorate (AFRL/IF). Engineers at LEAF use real-world investigative and criminal data to demonstrate how these Air Force technologies are modified to benefit law enforcement and corrections. This paper identifies and describes six Air Force technologies, for modification within the fields of law enforcement and corrections: (1) speech enhancement unit (SEU)--making law enforcement patrol communications, body wire, and suspect interview and interrogation recordings more intelligible; (2) automatic speaker recognition--identifying a speaker from a segment of his/her speech; (3) timeline analysis (TAS)--rendering graphic icons to show event patterns; (4) name-identity extraction--identifying words and word sequences in a document, forming names and categorizing them; (5) automatic "gisting"--monitoring speech, via computer for key words that indicate certain activities; and (6) automatic spoken language translation--translating human speech by computer.
