This document describes the Teen Court program as it has been implemented in North Carolina.
Abstract
The goal of Teen Court is to curtail misbehavior in school and the community and to curb future misconduct by placing responsibility for offenses upon the offender. Teen Court, an alternative method of discipline, involves the use of high school students as court bailiff, clerk, jury, prosecuting attorney, and defense attorney in the disciplinary phase of the referred infraction. Teenage offenders referred to Teen Court have already accepted guilt for the charged offense. Since peers best understand the problems faced by adolescents, Teen Court participants develop appropriate and effective ways of directing offenders' behavior and attitudes. This document outlines Teen Court procedures and lists resources.
