Findings and methodology are reported for a Washington State project that determined which initiatives funded under the federal Victims of Crime Act (VOCA) are effective and meeting their goals, where there are gaps in victim services, and how to address these gaps.
Abstract
Program data were obtained through a survey of victim service programs throughout the state and site visits. There were five key findings. First, programs that are reaching their goals are also increasing their volunteer numbers. Second, barriers to program success include inattention to staff mental health and staff self-care practices. Third, another barrier to program success may be the availability of staff training. Fourth, programs that have met their goals are often strongly supported by their communities. Fifth, programs anticipated continuing to expand their services to crime victims. 2 tables and 4 references
