This document presents the 11th volume of the Weed & Seed In-Sites magazine, which focuses on highlights from the 2003 National Conference in Albuquerque, NM.
Following a letter from the U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of New York on Weed and Seed's influence on homeland security, 13 articles describe effective Weed and Seed programs from around the country. The first six of these articles describe effective Weed and Seed programs focusing on law enforcement, such as Gulfton Weed and Seed Apartment Outreach Initiative in Houston that links apartment residents in southwest Houston with local police officers in an effort to improve the quality-of-life for these residents. Also described in this set of articles is the Weed and Seed clandestine methamphetamine laboratory initiative in Salt Lake City. The next three articles highlight what works among Weed and Seed prevention, intervention, and treatment programs, including a lead-based paint initiative in St. Louis and the second Atlantic City Weed and Seed Safe Haven program in New Jersey, which offers a safe place for area children to spend their time. Successful Weed and Seed neighborhood restoration programs are featured in the next four articles. Among these featured programs are the Boston Weed and Seed program that established a multi-unit housing initiative to address violent crime in apartment buildings and the A. Fielders Memorial Safe Haven program in New Mexico that offers a community center linking residents with law enforcement and other community services. The final section presents highlights from the 2003 Weed and Seed National Conference, which focused on implementing comprehensive multi-agency approaches to law enforcement, crime prevention, and community revitalization. Weed and Seed programs that earned awards during this conference are highlighted. Exhibits
