Abstract
The Denver Police Department has standardized a procedure for handling cold cases. On a Friday before a group of DNA samples is about to be sent to CODIS (Combined DNA Index System) on the following Monday, the cold-case sergeant who manages the nine investigators on the cases for which the DNA is being submitted are informed. Based on the knowledge that approximately 42 percent of the DNA samples submitted to CODIS will obtain a hit, the case files are pulled and reviewed and the fugitive team is alerted in case an identified suspect is somewhere not in custody. The aforementioned preparation is the standard operating procedure prior to every CODIS submission.
