In compliance with a provision of the federal First Step Act of 2018 (FSA), the U.S. Justice Department's Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS) presents data for calendar year 2018 from its National Prisoner Statistics program, which contains data from the Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP) on a number of topics, including selected characteristics of prisoners and selected facility characteristics.
Data on prisoner characteristics include marital, veteran, citizenship, and English-speaking status; educational levels; medical conditions; and participation in treatment programs. Facility data include the number of assaults on staff by prisoners; prisoners' violations that resulted in time-credit reductions; and selected facility characteristics related to accreditation, on-site health care, remote learning, video conferencing, and costs of prisoners' phone calls. The report contains the provision of the FSA (Title VI, Section 610) that lists the types of data that must be reported annually. 9 tables
