This fact sheet is a summary of juvenile court statistics, providing key statistics for the juvenile justice courts in the United States for 1992.

Abstract

In 1992, 1,471,200 delinquency cases were processed, and the number of cases involving offenses against persons increased 56 percent while property cases increased 23 percent since 1988. Detention statistics were provided showing that juveniles were securely detained in 20 percent of the delinquency cases processed in 1992, with a breakdown by type of offense. A table giving the most serious offense in delinquency cases in 1992, by percent change, as compared with 1991 and 1988, is provided. Other statistics provided include intake decisions, transfers to criminal court, adjudication and dispositions, gender, age, and race. For example, in 1992, 80 percent of the juvenile population was white and 15 percent Black with white juveniles involved in 65 percent of the delinquency cases handled by juvenile courts.
