The U.S. Department of Justice, Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention's (OJJDP's) bimonthly newsletter presents synopses of OJJDP research and program initiatives, training activities, recent publications, funding opportunities, and upcoming events. Highlights of major topics addressed in this issue include: (1) the 2010 initiative, Defending Childhood, aimed at preventing exposure to violence, mitigate the negative effects experienced by children exposed to violence, and develop knowledge about and spread awareness of the issue; (2) the 2010 Coordinating Council on Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention meeting summary; (3) the arts programs' initiative helping break the cycle of delinquency and violence; (4) the coordination of a national effort to register and monitor sex offenders under the Office of Sex Offender Sentencing, Monitoring, Apprehending, Registering, and Tracking (SMART); and (5) the annual Lights On Afterschool initiative, a nationwide rally for afterschool programs.
