This report presents the first set of research findings and conclusions from the National Science and Technology Council's Subcommittee on Forensic Science (SoFS), which addresses issues related to laboratory accreditation, certification of forensic science and medicolegal personnel, proficiency testing, and ethics.
The report details some of the Subcommittee's findings and work products, which can contribute to informative collaborative conversations on matters that can improve forensic science policy, research, and practice. The SoFS was composed of approximately 200 subject-matter experts across all levels of government. Participation was obtained from 23 federal departments and agencies. The five interagency working groups of the SoFS addressed 1) standards, practices, and protocols; 2) research, development, testing, and evaluation; 3) research, development, testing, and evaluation; 4) accreditation and certification; and 5) outreach and communication. This report presents the first set of research findings and conclusions of the SoFS, with a focus on accreditation, certification of forensic science and medicolegal personnel, proficiency testing, and ethics.
