The Citizens Commission on AIDS for New York City and Northern New Jersey presents an analysis of AIDS in the workplace, HIV and drug use, health care and social services, and education and prevention.
Abstract
Principal events and trends from 1987-1990 are summarized, and an agenda for policy makers and the public is outlined. Ten principles in the workplace are presented covering nondiscrimination, AIDS education, legal and ethical standards, and infection control as a basis for personnel policy development on HIV disease. The first 30 endorsers of the Ten Principles and the lists of 404 endorsers as of January 1991 are listed. An assessment of the care program and policies, particularly acute and long-term care programs, indicate the importance of community-based resources as a cost-effective alternative to institutionalized care and as a more humane service delivery system. Housing to prevent homelessness; early diagnosis and treatment, and special programs to meet the needs of women, children, and adolescents are recommended. A policy statement on drug use and HIV endorses improved access to drug treatment, education for those at risk, and increased government funding for the treatment programs. Ten myths about AIDS present prevalent misconceptions about AIDS education and facts and recommendations to refute them. 2 graphs and 37 notes
