REVIEW OF PROJECTS SPONSORED BY THE NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF LAW ENFORCEMENT AND CRIMINAL JUSTICE, CRITERIA USED IN THEIR SELECTION, AND RELEVANT CONSIDERATIONS FOR FUTURE RESEARCH ON HUMAN RESOURCES IN POLICE WORK.
Abstract
AMONG THE AREAS BEING RESEARCHED ARE PERSONNEL SELECTION STANDARDS AND PRACTICES AND CAREER PATHS IN LAW ENFORCEMENT. THE INSTITUTE LOOKS FOR PROJECTS THAT ARE WELL-PLANNED, PRODUCE A 'PRODUCT' SUCH AS A USER'S MANUAL TO AID OTHER IMPLEMENTATIONS, AND PROJECTS THAT HAVE SELF-MODIFYING CAPABILITIES TO MEET CHANGING CIRCUMSTANCES. FINALLY, IT IS SUGGESTED THAT INTERDEPARTMENTAL VARIABILITY ON FACTORS SUCH AS SIZE OF FORCE, TYPE OF CITY SERVED, AND RATIO OF NUMBERS OF POLICEMEN TO THE CITY POPULATION BE TAKEN INTO ACCOUNT WHEN SELECTING RESEARCH PROJECTS AND SITES.
