This Performance Update by the U.S. Justice Department's Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA) for October 2015-September 2016 pertains to BJA's Body-Worn Camera (BWC) grant program, which is intended to fund, guide, and measure outcomes for BWC projects for law enforcement agencies of various sizes.
Abstract
For fiscal year 2015, BJA awarded just over $18 million to support the implementation and enhancement of BWC programs in law enforcement agencies across the country. Seventy sites received funding for the implementation and expansion of existing BWC programs. Another award funded a national training and technical assistance (TTA) provider commissioned to build a national capacity to support the implementation of recommended BWC policy. Overall, during the BWC program's first year, grantees and sub-grantees reported progress in achieving program goals. Through September 2016, 42 percent of grantees and sub-grantees had their policy-development process approved by BJA. A total of 8,000 body-worn cameras were purchased by grantees; and nearly 10,000 officers received BWC training. These numbers are expected to increase over time as more agencies obtain BJA approval of their policy-development process and then move into the implementation phase of their project. Award amounts for FY 2015 projects are reported by agency size (large agencies and small agencies). 2 tables and 6 figures
