TABLES OF STATISTICS REGARDING BURGLARY ARRESTS, CASE DISPOSITIONS, AND OFFENDER CHARACTERISTICS.
Abstract
THE MAJOR CONCLUSION OF THIS REPORT IS THAT BURGLARY IS PRIMARILY A CRIME OF OPPORTUNITY RATHER THAN THE WORK OF PROFESSIONALS. PATTERNS OF BURGLARY ARREST SINCE 1960 HAVE CHANGED FROM PREDOMINATELY ADULT ARRESTS TO PRESENT RATIOS OF ABOUT HALF ADULTS AND HALF JUVENILES. THE AVERAGE BURGLAR WAS FOUND TO BE WHITE, MALE, AND UNDER 30 YEARS OLD. MOST BURGLARS APPREHENDED WORKED IN GROUPS OF TWO OR MORE RATHER THAN ALONE. MOST BURGLARIES OCCURRED WITHIN THREE MILES OF THE RESIDENCE OF THE BURGLAR.
