A March 1991 survey of California State correctional institutions gathered information regarding the alcohol and other drug prevention, treatment, and related services provided and the number of inmates and staff receiving the services.
Abstract
The telephone survey collected data from 21 institutions. Results revealed that the institutions provide 189 separate programs or services for inmates and nine programs or services for staff. They also described 10 new programs or services that will be offered soon. The seven types of services included treatment services, education, civil addict services, intervention services, prevention services, self-help programs, and law enforcement. The most common programs were self-help programs such as Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous. Nine institutions reported that 961 inmates were waiting for services, most often for self-help groups. Twenty institutions reported having 721 volunteers contributing to one or more services.
