This report provides uniform criteria for State health department personnel to use when reporting nationally notifiable infectious diseases. Definitions for some infectious conditions not designated as nationally notifiable are also included.
Abstract
Public health officials at the State and local level rely on health-care providers, laboratories, and other public health personnel to report the incidence of notifiable diseases to State and local health departments. This report provides updated uniform criteria for public health professionals to use when reporting the nationally notifiable infectious diseases listed. A table in Part 1 lists 52 infectious diseases designated as notifiable at the national level as of 1997. This is followed by case definitions for each disease, laboratory criteria for diagnosis, case classification, and in some instances, a publications list and comments. Case definitions for some infectious conditions not designated as nationally notifiable are included in Part 2 of this report. The list of nationally notifiable infectious diseases changes periodically. Diseases may be added to the list as new pathogens emerge or deleted as their incidence declines. These case definitions should be used for identifying and classifying cases for national reporting purposes.
