This guide from the Michigan State Court Administrative Office presents information on caseflow management.
Abstract
This guide was developed in response to the Michigan Supreme Court's recognition that the management of the flow of cases is primarily the responsibility of the judiciary. The guide incorporates information about court management principles that discuss the nature of caseflow management, court supervision of case progress, judicial leadership and support and the involvement of the State bar and justice agencies, and the use of either a manual or automated management information system to meet the goals and objectives of caseflow management. The guide is intended for use by chief judges, court administrators, and other staff members. The guide helps these interested stakeholders answer the following questions: what caseflow management is; why caseflow management is important; how to determine whether one's court has a problem with caseflow management; what a caseflow management plan should cover; how to use one's trial court's case management or information system effectively with a caseflow management plan; how to implement a caseflow management plan; and how to monitor and successfully maintain the operation of the case management system and caseflow management plan.
