Abstract
The publications in the Problem-Specific Guide series are intended to assist police and other law enforcement officials in reducing the harm caused by specific crime and disorder problems. This guide addresses the specific harms created by child abuse and neglect that occurs in the home, usually by the child's caretaker or someone close to the caretaker, such as the mother's boyfriend. The guide is divided into three major sections. The first section, The Problem of Child Abuse and Neglect in the Home, includes a general description of the problem, harms caused by abuse and neglect in the home, and a description of factors that contribute to the problem. The second section, Understanding Your Local Problem, includes information for stakeholders, a list of critical questions that should be asked of all those involved in the situation, and a way to measure the effectiveness of responses to the problem. The third section, Responses to the Problem of Child Abuse and Neglect in the Home, includes general considerations for an effective response strategy, specific responses to the problem, and responses with limited effectiveness. An appendix provides a summary of responses to the problem of child abuse and neglect in the home. Notes and references
