Abstract
This guide book, developed for the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), contains a set of clinical protocols for use by health care providers working to reduce high risk drinking among college students. The protocols are for use by physicians, nurses, social workers, health educators, counselors, and other health care professionals who work with college students to help them identify and treat students who are at-risk or are having alcohol-related problems. The protocols have been tested in a variety of settings and are based on science and clinical experience. The curriculum in the protocols is divided into four teaching modules. Module 1 focuses on the epidemiology and prevention of alcohol use and alcohol problems among college students, while module 2 reviews the screening and assessment of students in college health settings. Module 3 presents a number of clinical protocols used for brief intervention or brief talk therapy as well as the evidence that supports the use of these counseling methods, while module 4 focuses on development of skills in motivational interviewing. Also included in with the protocols is a set of PowerPoint slides for use with each module, and a brief intervention workbook for use with students. Tables, references, and appendixes
