THE RESULTS OF A SURVEY OF POLICE DEPARTMENTS ACROSS THE COUNTRY TO ASSESS THE IMPACT OF COMPUTERS AND COMPUTER RELATED TECHNIQUES ON POLICE OPERATIONS.
Abstract
THE AUTHOR UTILIZED QUESTIONNAIRES, TELEPHONE INTERVIEWS AND PERSONAL INTERVIEWS IN CONDUCTING HIS SURVEY. HE PROBED INTO ISSUES SUCH AS HOW POLICE USE COMPUTERS; STRUCTURED AND UNSTRUCTURED COMPUTER APPLICATIONS; AND, THE EVOLUTION OF COMPUTER USE. IN A SECTION DEALING WITH COMPUTER IMPLEMENTATION THE AUTHOR EXAMINES PROBLEMS HINDERING COMPUTER OPERATIONS; INTEGRATING COMPUTER USE WITH THE OPERATIONS OF THE POLICE DEPARTMENT; STAFFING A POLICE DATA PROCESSING FACILITY; TRANSFERING COMPUTER TECHNOLOGY; AND, THE DIFFERENCES IN IMPLEMENTING STRUCTURED AND UNSTRUCTURED POLICE COMPUTER USES. AFTER A DISCUSSION OF THE SECOND GENERATION PROBLEMS OF COMPUTER IMPACT, THE AUTHOR CONCLUDES HIS REMARKS.
