These six papers, presented by members of the Ad Hoc Working Group on the International Exchange of Crime Prevention Information (Australia, Canada, Federal Republic of Germany, Sweden, United Kingdom, and the United States), address the initiatives, successes, and plans for crime prevention in their respective countries.
Abstract
Summary descriptions of crime prevention programs in Australia encompass neighborhood watch, school-based policing, truancy patrols, drug-abuse prevention, and commercial/residential security information. The Canadian presentation focuses on the work of the Crime Prevention/Victim Services Branch of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. This is the policy and operational support unit for the proactive policing program, and it focuses on victim services programming, community-based policing, drug awareness/education, family violence, youth, and crime prevention. The paper by the West German representative addresses the prevention and management of public demonstrations by radical antisocial groups. It elaborates on the strategy of proactive response, conceptual planning, and professional action. The Swedish representative provides an overview of the crime prevention efforts of Sweden's National Council for Crime Prevention. Some of its efforts have addressed sports spectator violence, child sexual abuse, and crime in urban environments. Another paper provides an overview of some nationally initiated crime prevention efforts in the United Kingdom as well as some local efforts under the jurisdiction of the Northumbria Police Force. The description of national crime prevention efforts in the United States focuses on a media educational campaign and the structuring of public-private and intergovernmental cooperation in crime prevention efforts.
