This report presents Uniform Crime Report data for the first 3 months of 1984 and compares them to comparable 1983 data for the state of Hawaii, with a focus on crime trends in criminal homicide and manslaughter, forcible rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, larceny-theft, motor vehicle theft, and arson. A special report on arson trends is included.
Abstract
The number of reported statewide Index crimes for the first 3 months of 1984 declined by 5.2 percent as compared to the first 3 months of 1983, with all counties showing an overall decrease. Violent crimes decreased by 10.4 percent. Murders decreased by 38.5 percent. Rapes declined 25.7 percent. Robberies were down 6.1 percent, and aggravated assaults were down 10.8 percent. Property crimes decreased by 5 percent. All categories of property crime declined, with motor vehicle theft showing the largest decrease, 24.7 percent. Burglaries were down 5.9 percent, and larceny-thefts were down 2.2 percent. A special examination of arson for 1980 to 1982 shows an overall decrease of 25 percent over the 3-year period. Tables are provided which show the actual number of offenses reported, rate of change in violent crime, aggregate numbers of index offenses, percent change by county, and frequency of crimes. Included are 5 footnotes.
