This section of the "Strategic Planning Master Notebook" contains a lesson plan for a training workshop module on the development of risk assessments as part of a juvenile detention reform effort.
Abstract
The performance objectives of the module are to list the benefits of implementing a risk assessment instrument; to begin building consensus on risk assessment procedures; to identify essential elements of a risk assessment instrument; to develop an objective risk assessment instrument that effectively categorizes juvenile offenders; and to outline a plan for field testing and monitoring the risk assessment instrument. In addition to the listing of the performance objectives, the lesson plan describes instructional methods/techniques and lists the equipment and supplies needed. The outline of the course content focuses on the following issues in risk assessment planning: typical problems in detention admission policies and practices, as well as steps to take before developing a risk assessment instrument. Regarding the risk assessment instrument itself, the module addresses essential elements of a risk assessment instrument. The testing of the instrument is also discussed. Included in this section are participant worksheets, an annotated bibliography on offender classification, and sample risk assessment instruments from various jurisdictions across the country. A paper discusses risk assessment and classification for serious, violent, and chronic juvenile offenders.
